ABOUT THE INTERNSHIP
Day to Day life
As an intern at LSP, I spent the majority of my days designing automated processes for the manufacturing floor. The primary project I was working on was a way to place aluminum brackets into the newly designed closet flange(the part that goes under a toilet to assist in securing it to the floor). This semi-automated process required one worker to place the parts onto the pre-set pins for alignment, then press the button to allow for the machine to press the inserts all the way into the part. This solution helped mitigate damage to the plastic part while relieving the worker of having to hammer away at inserts causing fatigue. The main thing I learned from this project and internship is that the first design is never the best design and it can always improve, whether that is through cost, efficiency, or even just ease of use.
ADDITIONALÂ PROJECT
Computer Vision System
LSP had already started this project before I become an intern. The idea behind the project was to have a semi-automated computer vision system that checked the diameters of a push on valve and then decided to throw the part out or keep it. I assisted in some of the code for the PLC which controlled the entire process. I also assisted in assembling and wire the system for testing. (Video to the right). This project taught me about manufacturing processes as well as the capabilities of a machine shop. I worked closely with the machinists on all of the projects to learn the best designs that also proved to be easily produced.
